New York City’s first ever Japan Parade celebrates culture with music, dance and more

NEW YORK — Thousands gathered Saturday for Manhattan’s to start with ever Japan Parade.

As CBS2’s Thalia Perez experiences, organizers say the celebration also confirmed solidarity for other Asian nations as it celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Thirty day period.

The celebration of Japanese society stepped off on Central Park West, marching from West 81st Road to 68th.

The parade was led by none other than George Takei, popular for his position as Sulu on “Star Trek.” Takei served as grand marshal for the parade.

“The united states is a fantastic state. Japan is a great country,” Takei reported. “Search at all of these folks celebrating a Japan parade together. All the range of The us. It is really a glorious working day.”

There was audio, dance and celebration. The show of Japanese lifestyle was brought to New Yorkers by the nonprofit Japan Day Inc.

“Oh, it was lovely. And hunting around, and the people did a excellent work,” 1 paradegoer said.

One particular reveler celebrated Japanese tradition with outfits he developed himself.

“I went to Japan to study Japanese artwork, the tea ceremony so it was a fantastic opportunity to arrive celebrate it in New York,” he stated.
