Peres Assignments is happy to present “Shit Mirror”, George Rouy’s (b. 1994 in Sittingbourne, Uk) next solo exhibition at the gallery.
Rouy’s canvases are stuffed with bodies, equally on your own and in groups. The figures could be multiples of by themselves – as shadows, reflections or twins. The moi getting projected and refracted, and a website for self-recognition.
These figures are partly bounded/contained, but typically the borders of the overall body are exploded, entities develop into entangled, and the attributes within are abstracted and distorted. Brushstrokes that produce tightness or smoothness blur into tough energetic mark producing in a drive and pull amongst shaped figures and varieties inside of abstraction.
While these non-narrative works do not set a scene, they do established a presence that the viewer is guided by way of by way of smears and swirls of coloration and paint as effectively as empty house – balancing chaos with peaceful. Led by the brush, the tempo of the exhibition is established by the artist’s physicality, steps and rhythm.
The scale of the paintings are substantial – mapped by the limit of Rouy’s have system. His gestures transmute his possess kinetic energy onto the canvas in a restless exploration of the human sort and its limitations. Leaning into abstraction, these sensorial operates express what a system feels like and the distinctive physical and psychic states that we practical experience – held up like hazy mirrors for us to discern our possess outlines.
